Centennial Messages

Message from Marline Stephenson Dalley - Chairman Mt. Alvernia Chetwood Centennial Committee

It is with immense joy and heartfelt gratitude that I welcome you to this historic celebration – 100 years of unwavering commitment, faithful service, and transformative education across our three beloved institutions: Mt Alvernia High, Chetwood Memorial Primary and Mt. Alvernia Preparatory and Kindergarten School.

Reaching this centennial milestone is no small feat. It is a testament to the resilience, faith, and determination that have shaped our schools since their founding in 1925 by our Franciscan Sisters of Allegany and Father Thomas Chetwood. Anchored in Christian principles of faith, humility, kindness and respect, our institutions have stood as beacons of hope and opportunity for generations. We have weathered many storms, adapted to changing times, and remained steadfast in our mission to nurture young minds and mold character through holistic education.

As we give thanks for the past and celebrate the present, we also look forward with purpose. A series of exciting events has been carefully planned for you – moments for reflection, reconnection, and rejoicing. From our joint activities which included our opening church service and brunch in January, to a joyful beach party in July, the commemoration of Mt Alvernia/Chetwood Day and giving of the keys to the city of Montego Bay by the Municipal Corporation of St James, a week of home-coming activities for Mt Alvernia High in October and a symbolic walk/run in November, each event is an opportunity for our community to come together in love and legacy. (See the calendar of events)

To our alumni across the globe—this is your moment. We urge you to participate, reconnect with old friends, relive cherished memories, and most importantly, give back. We have identified three meaningful legacy projects—one for each institution—that will ensure our schools remain strong for generations to come. Your presence, your prayers, and your support are vital.

Join us as we honour the past, celebrate the present, and build for the future. Happy 100th anniversary—and may God continue to bless and guide our steps.

Message from the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany Celebrating 100 Years of Educational Excellence at Mount Alvernia

With hearts full of gratitude and joy, the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany celebrate the 100th anniversary of Mount Alvernia High School, Mount Alvernia Preparatory School, and Chetwood Memorial Primary School. For a century, these institutions have been sacred spaces of learning, faith, and transformation, nurturing minds and hearts in the spirit of St.Francis of Assisi.

We give thanks for the countless individuals—boards of management, principals, students, teachers, staff, parents, and benefactors—who have been part of this journey. Their dedication and love have shaped generations of young people who now serve with
distinction across Jamaica and around the world.

We are proud of the legacy of excellence in education, rooted in Gospel values and a commitment to the holistic development of each child. Our schools have formed leaders, professionals, and compassionate citizens whose lives continue to reflect the values instilled at Mount Alvernia.

As we look to the future, we do so with confidence and hope, trusting that God, who has blessed these past 100 years, will continue to guide and inspire all who pass through the doors of our beloved schools.
